The Coming Wave of Insolvencies?
According to some market experts, worldwide insolvencies will start hitting the markets over the next few months.Among the pressures that could cause insolvencies is the ongoing downturn in the U.S. housing market. While a sharp increase in defaults may not occur until next year, continued pressure in some sectors such as retailing, chemicals, paper and packaging could result in more insolvencies in the next several months. One area of concern in the U.S. is the automotive-supply sector in Michigan. It’s believed by some that Michigan could see a bump up in prepackaged and prenegotiated corporate bankruptcies soon.
The Credit Manager’s Q&A Corner
Question: Explain the importance of liens when extending credit.
Answer: Liens are believed to be a useful tool for the collection process. Liens, which can be used when a debtor has failed to make a timely debt payment, should thus be considered by a creditor before extending credit. One problem, however, is that mercantile and credit-reporting agencies don’t’ always have timely information about a debtor’s liens.A lien search, however, can be initiated in such cases since all liens are a matter or public record.
