Bankruptcy Filings in the First Half of the Year Up 48%

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts reported that the total number of U.S. bankruptcy filings for the first six months of 2007 increased 48% - to just over 404,000. Consumer bankruptcy filings increased 48% - to 391,000 for the period, Chapter 13 filings were up 41% and Chapter 7 consumer filings were up nearly 62%. Business filings for the first six months increased 45% - to just under 13,000 while Chapter 7 liquidations increased 65% - to 8,400 filings.
